Step 1: FRINGE TRIM
Fringe trim adds texture and movement, not to mention it matches the western style of the denim vest. Try a beaded fringe which adds a little jingle. Choose your favorite color to compliment your own charm.
Match up the trim with a seam on the back of the vest, leave a little excess on each side of the arms. Turn the ends of the fringe into the arm hole and stitch in place on the inside. Always sew across the entire strip of fringe. Tie knots in the thread inside of the garment. You could also use fabric glue here if you don’t want to hand sew your fringe.
Step 2: IRON-ON PATCH
Patches are a great way to display memories, interests and just quirky items you like. Think of it as a collection you add to regularly. Choose to start your display of patches on the top shoulder section so your collection has room to grow across the top portion of your vest from shoulder to shoulder.
Most importantly follow the instructions that come with your iron-on patch. It’s really important to leave the iron pressed on the edges a few seconds longer so the patch will stay affixed. If your patch is personal and doesn’t come with the iron-on feature, just use some fabric glue or sew it by hand around the edges!
Step 3: FLOWER PIN
Pastels and floral patterns are popular trends that will add some femininity and sweetness to a hardcore accessory such as a vest. A pin is easily attached, and can be removed whenever you want to use it on another outfit.
To attach a pin is obviously very simple. If you prefer, choose a spot in the upper shoulder section by your patches. Place items in clusters to offer a visual focus, but it’s up to you where you want to place your pin.
Step 4: LACE TRIM
Lace is another great girly detail you can add as a trim. It’s design adds dimension to the denim color of your vest. If your taste is a bit more feminine and you’re into the lace trend, place your trim around pockets or around the lower hem.
Attach the lace to the front chest pocket or hem, match edge to edge. Again, remember to start to sew underneath so that you can’t see the knot. Sew across the entire trim. Double stitch on one end and tie a knot at the other end. Use the glue here if you prefer!
Step 5: GLUE ON JEWELS
If you have a flashy personality, be sure to add jewels and sparkle to your vest. Think about your birthstone when you choose beads or jewels which definitely add a personal touch. Look for any color, shape or texture of beads and use as many or as few as you want.
You can attach almost any bead with fabric glue but, if the bead has a hole through the center, you can sew it on. Before you use the glue, be sure to read the instructions on the package. It’s permanent so be careful! Select a particular area of the vest that is sectioned off by seams to bejewel. This combines a lot of sparkle in a cluster and catches a lot of different colors in various light.
THE FINISHED PRODUCT
KEEP IN MIND
There are a few things to keep in mind when you create your DIY project. Most importantly make this a fun, safe and a creative activity! Hand-wash the finished product. While most of it should be safe in a washing machine, your add-ons could fall off or be damaged; especially remove the pin! Never use a dryer, hang up or lay flat to air dry. Have fun girls!
