Prom is the night when you absolutely have to look your best. However, it’s easy to break the bank in a quest for beauty. Expensive price tags do not have to equal glamour. With these helpful hints, you can look like a million bucks without destroying your bank account.
Your instinct may be to rush out and purchase a brand-new, expensive dress for prom, but you can wow just as much in re-vamped duds. Create a vintage and unique look by altering the hemline or straps of an old dress, and adding some lace or ribbons to the fabric. Check out your mom’s closet since she might have a retro dress that fits perfectly and just needs a little redesign. If you don’t have an old dress to resurrect, borrow a friend’s dress from one of her past formals, or trade with a friend from another school. No one will ever know!
Why spend hours waiting at a restaurant when you could save cash and time eating a special meal at home? Choose an easy recipe you and the girls can prepare the night before. On prom night, simply throw the meal in the oven while you’re primping. Add candles and fresh flowers to the table and play a romantic soundtrack in the background. If you’re not exactly Rachael Ray, check out catering prices from your favorite restaurant, or order bulk to-go dishes. Transfer the food into a variety of darling dishes and set up stations (salad, main dish, dessert) at different tables (or houses!).
Sprinkle sparkle into your updo with bobby-pins, thin wire and beads or inexpensive jewels. Tie one end of the wire to a bobby-pin, weave the wire throughout your hair while strategically threading on a bead where you want a little shine. Tie the other end of the wire to another bobby-pin to secure the beads. Or visit a craft store like Hobby Lobby to find a silk flower that matches your dress to pin in your hair.
Spruce up some old shoes or create your own jewelry with beads, gems and a glue gun!
Extras like nice nails are essential, but can wreak havoc on an already-extended budget. Throw a spa party a few nights before the big day with your girlfriends and do your own (or each other’s!) nails. Hit up Sephora to find the perfect matching hue to complement your gown or follow these steps to create a dazzling French manicure. Grab cheap band-aids with curved ends, nude polish, white polish and a clear top-coat. Shape the end of your nail with band-aids and paint the tip white. When dry, layer a coat of the nude polish over the entire nail and then later cover with top-coat.
