When you’re busy and overwhelmed it’s easy to misplace important items. How often have you lost your phone or a folder you really needed for school? Or, couldn’t find your favorite lip-gloss while you were getting ready? Being organized doesn’t come naturally for most people, so don’t feel like a slob if your room isn’t the tidiest place in the world. But, having your surroundings organized can help you save time, keep a clear head and feel better about life in general. Try to implement a few of these tips to add some order in your life and keep your spaces looking neat.
Bedroom
- It’s important to remember, no matter where you are, to always place things back where you found them. Not only does this stop you from setting something down and then forgetting where you placed that item, but it also helps in keeping your space tidy.
- As tempting as it is to roll out of bed and head straight for the kitchen or bathroom, don’t do it! Since the bed is the focal point of your room, and it’s the first thing you and others see, making your bed as soon as you wake up is imperative. Having smooth sheets and fluffed pillows will give the whole room a more inviting feel.
- If your closet is a mess, step back and figure out why. Is it your shoes? Consider purchasing a shoe rack. There are even shoe racks that can hang on your closet door so it won’t take up space on the ground. Is it that you have too many clothes? First, don’t throw dirty clothes onto your closet floor to avoid dealing with them. Instead, wash them and put them back where they belong, or at the very least, place them in a dirty clothes basket until you have time to do laundry. Secondly, storing clothes that aren’t in season will help to free up some space. Also, taking out clothes that you rarely wear and keeping them in your dresser until you’re in the mood to wear them will provide more closet space. Or, consider giving them to your local charity, along with your clothes that no longer fit, and make someone else’s day!
- Accessories are usually small, making them much easier to lose. Having a jewelry case for your earrings, bracelets and necklaces will remedy this problem. Keeping items like scarves, hats, belts, gloves and purses on the top shelf of your closet will help you store everything in the same place, eliminating the possibility that they’ll end up all over your room.
Bathroom
- Having a place where you can grab your bathroom essentials easily (i.e. oral hygiene products, feminine hygiene products, deodorant, soap) makes your daily hygiene run smoother. There are containers with sections where you can keep your toothbrush, toothpaste and floss all together. It’s actually more sanitary to let your toothbrush dry upright, so that’s a plus too!
- Organizing your makeup can be a hassle. There are so many pieces to consider, which is why it’s probably easier separating the makeup you use on a daily basis into it’s own bag, basket or container and store the rest away somewhere cool and dry. If you have a large makeup collection then it’s a good idea to invest in a makeup case, which will have compartments for all of your beloved pieces.
- If your shower is starting to look like it’s being overrun by shampoos and body washes, then a shower caddy that attaches to your shower-head or shower door can help. Keeping all of your hygiene products in one, easily accessible place eliminates a lot of the hassle. If you can’t find a shower caddy and you’re the type to forget to bring your hygiene products into the shower with you, consider keeping duplicates of the same product. For example, keeping a face wash on your sink, and another in your shower, will make it so you don’t have to tote the bottle back and forth.
- Of course, making sure to clean up after yourself whenever you use the bathroom is important too. Since so many things happen in a bathroom, it can become dirty pretty easily. Simple tasks such as wiping down the sink after brushing your teeth and sweeping the floor after doing your hair will prevent your bathroom from becoming a mess.
Desk
- Now, most of you probably don’t have a whole space dedicated only to doing homework, but creating one is something you might want to do. Doing your homework in your bed may be more comfortable, but it isn’t recommended. Your bed is for sleeping, like an office is for working. Your study space can be the kitchen table, a desk in your bedroom or even the patio. Everything having to do with school will go where you designated your study space. Then, when you need something for school, you know exactly where to go!
- Making sure your desk area is stocked with everything you need to study and do homework with will help you become a better student. Containers with pens and pencils, a stack of clean printer paper and a snack prevent you from having to get up for anything once you’ve started working on your school assignments.
- When you’re finished working in your office space, be sure to tidy up. Pens and pencils go in their designated container. All of your papers go in a folder or into your book bag. And of course, don’t leave leftover food lying around.
These tips are meant to simplify your life, and help you to stay in control of your spaces. As the saying goes, “cleanliness is next to godliness.” Keeping a clean and organized room will cut down on stress, and probably make your parents very happy. However, do it for you.
