If your room is filled with fun photographs, bulletin boards covered in ticket stubs and homework, plus lots of furry and fluffy pillows strewn around, than it may be more of a distraction than a stimulating environment. Your surroundings may be making it difficult to concentrate and study. Create a space that compliments your personality and stimulates focus so you’re ready for those long study sessions this fall.
Natural Garden
When setting the tone for a long study session, you want to feel calm and ready to absorb information. Transform your study space into a Zen-like garden to feel rejuvenated while reading through your biology text. Center your space around natural features: such as a wooden desk, chair or desk decorations; paint your walls the color of the ocean or sky; add a plant, sand or rock garden, small fish tank or splurge on a mini water fountain for your desk. Light a candle and put on some music with natural sounds.
Bold and Bright
If you’re active or need a little uplift to motivate you to study, then create an electrifying retro space. Bold lines and colors will add energy to your space while cramming for your history exam. Begin by adding a warm, cozy chair in red, orange or bright yellow. Place a piece of modern art or something that makes you smile within eye reach. To keep the energy flowing, contrast your warm colors with a neutral tone of beige, black or white.
Mindful Minimalist
You’re a go-getter, pursuing greatness and success, so a sophisticated space that compliments your intellectual drive is just what you need to set things in motion. Create a clutter-free space with bold lines to help you get down to business when tackling those calculus problems. Build your space around a modern rectangular desk in black, white, silver or gray. Decorate within those color schemes, then add a metal desk lamp with a cotton or linen shade. Set an ambiance with music that has even beats and rhythms to match your mood.
Industrial and Eclectic
You find inspiration in the world around you, and you need that to motivate you when you study. Rather than piling your desk high of little trinkets and pictures that you love, create a calming space so you can delve into another writing assignment. Stick to neutral colors or no more than three bold colors, and establish a theme throughout. Create collages of your favorite pieces by placing them on a tray or desk organizer, a shelf or tightly on a wall. Give yourself room to study, and allow your mind to roam just a little. Enjoy listening to jazz and let the instruments take you to a state of contemplation.
Passionate Pondering
“Over the top” describes your personality and style, so having a clutter-free desk may actually be a hindrance rather than a help. Make sure you have enough space to study and do your class projects, but strategically layer on girly frills that motivate and excite you. Stick to a color scheme (such as rose gold) or theme (such as flowers or animals). Decorate with a lot of pieces that allow for plenty of overlap: desk shelves, clip frames and books. Add a plant and plenty of light to make your space come to life. Turn on instrumental music and lay a fluffy blanket over your chair for the ultimate study session.
Glamorous Grind
Glamour perfectly describes your personality and your style, therefore your study space shouldn’t be any different. Where you usually layer on the bling, your desk needs to maintain your style clutter-free so you can write up your book report. Find an intricate desk and vintage chair, then decorate with gold! Add fresh flowers to your desk as a colorful feature that shifts and changes with the season. Make sure your desk has lots of drawers to hide a lot of your school work and projects so they don’t quickly overwhelm or stress you out. Turn on some pop music and let the rhythm instill focus and creativity.

Our environment, specifically how furniture and elements of nature are arranged within personal spaces, can impact or impair the flow of energy of the space making it hard to function properly in that setting. Here are four tips to help maintain a better study space, assisting you with learning and concentration.
- Don’t face your desk toward a wall; you could be suffering a major creativity block.
- Set candles or picture frames of friends or nature on the right side of the desk to boost your memorization capabilities.
- Leave 50% of your desk clear from clutter so hide any projects you aren’t currently working on in your backpack, a cabinet or decorative filing box.
- If you feel like you lack vision or have low self-esteem in your bedroom, then get rid of your TV, and don’t have it easily accessible when you’re working on homework.
