Dye It: You Might Like It
The best part of being young is exploring new styles to discover your identity and what you like and don’t like. That includes hair color and styles. The rainbow of colors is certainly popular and beautiful, but don’t disregard more traditional color changes. Whether going for a subtle change or a dramatic shift, here’s some helpful tips for gaining beautiful color-treated hair at home, without the financial commitment of a salon.

Tips for Dying My Hair
- Choose a color that is within two shades (lighter or darker) of your current hair color.
- Know how long the dye will last and what type of maintenance is required.
- Semi-permanent lasts 6 to 12 washes and works best when you’re making subtle changes in shade.
- Demi permanent is an opaque formula that stays in hair for 12 to 24 washes. This is the best choice when you’re transitioning to a darker color.
- Permanent color is exactly as it says. It doesn’t wash out, but grows out. It’s best used when you’re changing to either a lighter or a darker color.
- If you have long or thick hair, it’s better to buy two boxes of dye but only open one. You can always return one, give it to a friend or save it for next time if you don’t use it, but it would be horrible to run out without a full head of hair done.
- Before you start, have EVERYTHING you need ready and available: clips, a comb, an old dark towel and a timer. Apply your hair dye in the bathroom and wear a robe or a top that buttons up the front so you won’t have to lift a shirt over your head when it’s time to rinse.
- Avoid staining skin by applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly or a clear solid lip balm along your hairline and ears.
- If you have sensitive skin, then color your hair when it’s a little dirty. The skin’s natural oils will help prevent irritation. So, dye your hair about two days after your last shampoo.

Dying My Hair How-To
Now that you’ve done the prep work, it’s time to start the dying process with these hair dye tips.
- Separate hair into four sections: front, back and sides. To prevent dying the front section too dark, start with the back section.
- Saturate your hair completely to ensure the best coverage by using a lot of product on each area.
- When touching up roots, only apply color to that area. Only cover the entire strand if you’re doing a complete color change.
- Use shampoos that are safe for color-treated hair. We recommend Keratin Complex Color Care Shampoo or Matrix Color Obsessed Shampoo.
- The hair industry recommends applying an in-shower gloss treatment once a week to boost shine. These treatments, however, aren’t the best for the health of your hair and skin, so consider what’s most important if/when using these treatments.
- For a quick touch-up between dying, use Color Wow Root Cover Up powder. You can customize your shade with two complementary tones. The product only lasts until you shampoo, but it buys you time if you need to revive your hair but don’t have the time or money.
Now that you’re armed with these hair dye tips, have fun trying new shades to find the perfect match for your personality!
