Our culture loves movies about revenge, but a story about forgiveness captivates the heart like none-other. But, a film that touches on God’s forgiveness has power. Here are nine films about God’s forgiveness, or at least can teach us about God’s forgiveness, not just human forgiveness.
- The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
Depicting Jesus, Aslan forgives Edwin who betrays him and his family. He willingly sacrifices his life in order to save Edwin’s.
- The Song
The Song is a beautiful love story filled with lust and loss. Based on Song of Songs, Jed King is a musician who falls in love with a farmer’s daughter, Rose Jordan. He captures her heart with a song that thrusts him into fame. He boldly lives an honorable life on the road until one day he turns toward lust and loses everything. Just like God, Rose forgives the unforgivable when Jed repents and their marriage is renewed.
- Redeeming Love
Another film based on a book of the Bible, Redeeming Love depicts Hosea as Michael falls in love with a sought after prostitute. After she finally agrees to marry, she runs away because she doesn’t believe that she deserves such love. Michael represents God’s ability to love us unconditionally and overtime, she accepts his love for her.

- Wish Man
After a near death experience, Frank, a motorcycle policeman, becomes a mentor to a young boy who dreams of being a cop. Diagnosed with Leukemia, Michael doesn’t have long to live. Frank is determined to make his wish come true. As he experiences the impact it makes on Michael’s life, he realizes that he can easily make one wish come true at a time. (Frank is the founder of Make-a-Wish foundation). Frank became a father figure to Michael when he needed it the most, and by doing so, he forgave his own father (and mother). God’s forgiveness allows us to wipe our past clean and start afresh with a new purpose in life.
- Mr. Holland’s Opus
When Cole is finally able to forgive his father, it’s because he realizes that his dad finally sees and accepts him for who he is. God always accepts us for who we are and forgives us when we’re not able to see our own identity.
- A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
Mr. Roger, to so many of us, taught us Biblical lessons and was an honorable and true figure. He had no reason to forgive anyone because he always saw the good in people. Similarly, God sees the good in us.

- Hugo
A young orphan holds onto a mystery from his father. One day he crosses paths with a girl who literally holds the key to his past – and thus his future. As he ventures closer to finding his true identity, everyone in his past must forgive themselves in order to find restitution. This incredible story helps us see that both forgiveness and life are greater than our own perspective. God sees all things, while we only see what’s around us. He has eyes into the past and the future. Letting go of hardship allows us to embrace a larger picture.
- Inside Out
Our emotions can get the best of us, and when they do, disaster awaits. As Riley’s life is flipped upside down, her world is torn apart. In order to rebuild it, she must find forgiveness deep inside. True forgiveness isn’t a surface level fantasy, it’s a God ordained reality.
- Unbroken
In an interview with Franklin Graham, Louis Zamperini explains that the demons of life started tormenting him after the war, not while he was in prison camp. When he found God and wrestled with forgiving his captors, he found peace. His strength didn’t come from his physical performance, it came from God helping him to forgive. God’s forgiveness overcomes all the demons in our life.
