Finding Normal in the UnNormal

We’ve been shut inside our houses, apartments, possibly even a single room for weeks now. Our world has become confined to a screen. Our identity exists in a virtual box. Simple tasks are ruled by a digital domain. What once seemed normal, now feels like a dream. The certainty of our daily life has become unreliable. It seems like we took for granted what should be our reality.

But as we peer outside, into the natural world, we can see the ground bursting with life. Beautiful yellow buds are blossoming out of the earth. Trees are revealing a fresh green lace. Purples and pinks are exposing a great energy that wasn’t there prior. Each bloom looks brighter and more vibrant than any flower ever seen before. Birds are chirping a brilliant song. Spring is here. For a moment, life seems normal again.

The coming of spring isn’t actually more magnificent this year. Our hiding away hasn’t made the external world more glorious. But our hope for a new season in life has heightened our senses, bringing clarity to what previously may have been lost in the commotion of life.

Something to Rely On

In the midst of all the insecurity and chaos of the Coronavirus Pandemic, God has given us something reliable. He has given us something we can be sure of. He has given us something to expect and to stand firm on. He has been our constant.

His love, His faithfulness, His promises and providence – we can rely on all of that. But we can also rely on the simple fact that He will make the sun come up tomorrow. He will make spring turn into summer. He will overcome any fear, anger, confusion, doubt we have. He will always give us something normal in the midst of whatever may be unpleasant and far from normal.

There is no “new normal” in Christ. He IS the stability that gives us something “normal” to rest in. He will give us something to look forward to and something to anticipate.

  • Though it is not “normal” to stay six feet away from other people, it is normal to embrace the Father’s love for us.
  • It isn’t normal to wear a mask when you’re buying milk, it is normal for God to provide everything we need.
  • It is not normal to sing happy birthday to your best friend via some technological invention, it is normal to celebrate life.

There are so many things that seem “unnormal,” God’s presence in our lives can give us peace and security in the ordinary as well as the unordinary. He has the ability to make life normal because He is a continuous, unending, steady beat. He can bring normalcy to the most unnormal situation.

Praise the Lord, my soul;

all my inmost being, praise his holy name.

Praise the Lord, my soul,

and forget not all his benefits—

who forgives all your sins

    and heals all your diseases,

who redeems your life from the pit

and crowns you with love and compassion,

who satisfies your desires with good things

so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Psalm 103: 1-5

As you’re struggling with seeing His faithfulness, look at the earth budding and coming to life. Soon we will find revival and a life that is abundant.
