Following God’s Life Purpose and Knowing Who I Am

God Cannot Be Mocked

What does it mean to mock someone? It means to tease or laugh at someone in a scornful or contemptuous manner. But, can we mock God? Certainly, people scorn Him, are contemptuous toward Him or laugh at ways He allows the world to operate. As Christians, can we mock God? Yes, we mock Him by pretending to be what we’re not. Or, by not honoring and respecting what He created and how it was created. This means anytime you try to change yourself to fit into a group at school, to be accepted by a boy or to mold yourself into societies definitions of beauty, you are in a sense mocking God. Through your actions and motives, you’re informing Him that the way He created you isn’t good enough.

Mocking God also entails ignoring what He’s called you to do. As a teenager, He has called you to simple things like honoring your parents, respecting authority, refrain from cussing, caring for your body through eating right, exercising and abstaining from hurtful practices, following governing laws, striving to do your best in school, etc. But, He has also called you to a particular purpose: a goal or plan that He designed specifically for you. If you misbehave or go against what He’s called you to do, then you’re mocking God. If you disregard, ignore or minimize your purpose, you’re mocking God. Whenever you aren’t following His intentions for your life – you’re telling Him that your way of life is better than what He intended for you.

The Lord Knows Our Heart and Purpose

Now, we’re human and we’ll mess up. We will fall short; we will become tired, frustrated and beaten down. Satan is trying to pull us away from our identity. So, staying the coarse is not always going to be easy. The Lord knows our heart and our intentions. He’s not hurt when we’re weary and simply can’t keep up with the demands of the world. But, when we purposefully turn our backs away from God and His ways, we’re not only hurting ourselves, we’re hurting Him. God’s NOT disappointed in us when we fail. He wants what’s best for us. He will heal us and help us turn back to what He knows is good and pure.

If you don’t feel like God has shown you your purpose, then ask Him. He’ll delight in showing you what He’s designed you for. Sometimes it takes a little while to hear God completely, but He’ll give you confirmation over and over again. Your gifts, talents, desires and passions are all insight into God’s greater purpose for your life; so don’t give up seeking His will for your life. He’ll help you pursue His desires if you let Him. Rather than running from God’s intentions – seek them wholeheartedly.

Pursuing God’s Purpose as Part of Who I Am

The scripture Galatians 6: 7-10, takes this concept even further. When we pursue Him, we will be able to find contentment and satisfaction in our life. Plus, we will produce incredible results. 

“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”

Galatians 6:7-10

If you refuse to do what God has called to you do, then you’ll produce things that are damaging and unhelpful. But, when we pursue God’s intentions for our lives, we’ll produce things that bring us (as well as others) closer to God. When we do good for ourselves and others, we make an incredible impact in the world around us – an impact that will not go unnoticed.
