Gratitude Reveals Our Identity

GIRL STUFF, BECAUSE SOMETIMES NO ONE ELSE UNDERSTANDS

Thankfulness reveals who we truly are. It’s a reflection of our identity. What we’re thankful for demonstrates our hearts desire. It exposes our character. It shows what’s really important to us. Our gratitude communicates our wants and needs. It unveils what we value.

Christians Are Thankful

God calls us to be grateful:

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18)

“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” (Colossians 4:2)

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians (4:6)

As Christians we are supposed to be thankful. That’s something that sets us apart from other people. The Bible helps define the lifestyle of a Christian in contrast to that of a non-believer.

Throughout his letters, Paul lists out a variety of actions and lifestyle choices of non-believers. He contrasts that with the lifestyle of a Christian, who is thankful.

A thankful heart is a sign of someone who follows the Lord because thankfulness is a reflection of His heart. Thankfulness is delightful to the Lord. Especially when we have to work hard at it, God notices and takes pleasure in our actions.

Thankfulness Can Be Difficult

It’s hard to be thankful in a world that’s consumed by darkness and negativity, but our thankfulness produces much needed light.  Finding the ability and energy to give thanks in a world that is full of selfishness, hatred and shame is hard. When we’re thankful for things in the midst of grumbling, we stand out. It’s hard to go against the flow. It’s difficult to be thankful even when we’re experiencing pain or suffering. But this is what God has called us to do.  It isn’t always easy to be thankful, and we shouldn’t act as if it is.

Gratefulness and Faith

Our thankfulness is a demonstration of our faith, so be thankful! What we are thankful for discloses our relationship with the Lord. Our thankfulness can demonstrate whether or not we trust Jesus. It exhibits how much we know and rely on Him. Our thankfulness unearths how much we try to take control of our own lives. Show your faith through gratitude.

When no one else is thanking God for everything He’s done in their life, let your gratitude be a testimony in your life. Show others how incredible our God is by thanking Him when all others fall silent. Our gratefulness is an expression of following God’s will, desires and intentions for our lives. Be thankful that God guides us through this life. He takes the muck and makes something beautiful!
