It happens every year: summer comes to an end, and it’s time to head back to school and hit the books! Take the sting out of the ending of your sweet summer with some trendy back-to-school hairdos that’ll make every day interesting!

Wave Curls

A timeless, sophisticated hairstyle that’s simple to do and creates a pulled-together look with any outfit. These waves can work wonders for both longer and shorter hair!

Separate hair into sections and curl each section of hair, securing the tighter curls with hair spray. Use at least a 1.5” curling iron or barrel curling iron. After hair has set, comb out curls with a fine-tooth comb to create lose, even waves. Use hair spray to secure. You may want to use volumizing spray prior to drying hair and heat-protective spray prior to curling.

Halo

Whether you wear a braid across your forehead or at the nape of your neck, creating a halo is a classic and beautiful expression.

Part hair down the middle and secure each side at the base of the neck with an elastic. Separate each part into 3 sections and do an easy braid, securing the end. Criss cross the two braids and circle around your head, securing with bobby pins as you go. Hide the end of your braid under the other braid and secure with a bobby pin.

If you have shorter hair, you will need to part your hair in three to four sections, depending on the length of the hair, braiding each section and wrapping around your head.

For a fuller look, pull on the strands of your braid to loosen it prior to wrapping it around your head. Set the look with hairspray.

There are a ton of varieties that you can do to change your Halo Braid, such as a Dutch, Fishtail or Half-up-Half-Down Halo.

Half-Up-Half-Down Halo

A soft and whimsical look that’s amazing for all hair types.

Create a deep side part. Take a section on the top of your head and divide it into three parts. Start braiding those strands, moving your way across your head. When you reach the corner of your forehead, toward your ear, start incorporating strands from above the braid only. Continue around your head until you’ve incorporated the hair above your other ear. Now, braid the rest of the hair and secure with an elastic band. Wrap the braid around your head to create a halo, securing with bobby pins. Tuck the end of the braid into the updo and secure with bobby pins. Spray with hairspray to set.

Fishtail

Soft Fishtail Braids create an elaborate look with little effort.

Take a thin portion of your hair from each side of your face. Loosely criss-cross them over your hair at the base of your neck, forming an “X.” Then, take another thin portion from right below the previous section, criss-crossing them right below the previous portion. Continue with thin pieces on both sides of your head until you’ve created a braid that’s the length you desire. Secure the braid with a hair tie.

Space Bun

Space buns are truly the most trendy hairstyle right now. You can wear this look messy, sleek, half-up/half-down, at the top of a french braid, you name it! Decide on a style suitable for your personality and hair style, then let the double buns shine.

Part your hair into two ponytail sections at the top of your head, very loosely braiding them or just simply wrapping them into a Princess Leia look.

Bubble Braid or Pony

The bubble braid or ponytail is another major trend for heading back-to-school.

For a bubble ponytail, tease the hair of your ponytail for volume and thickness. Using elastic bands, make a “bubble” by creating sections and pulling hair slightly out of each chunk. Spritz your hair with some hairspray to ensure it stays in place throughout the day.

A bubble braid incorporates hair at every elastic hair band, starting at the top of the head and moving your way down.

Use various color bands for a playful approach.

Dutch Braid

Wide Dutch Braids are very editorial and taking their place in this year’s lineup.

Double Dutch braids are trendier than single Dutch Braids this year, but both are beautiful. Create a center part from your forehead to the nap of your neck for a Double Dutch Braid. Working on one side, take a small section just above the forehead and separate into three smaller sections. Take the right section and cross it under the middle section, so it now becomes the middle section. Take the left section and cross it under the middle section, so it becomes the middle section. Then take the piece that was originally the middle, but is now the right, and incorporate some hair from the right side of your braid into that section. Cross that section under the middle section. Repeat on the left side, incorporating hair from the left side into the braid. Alternate right and left incorporating hair as you work your way down to the base of your neck. Continue your braid and secure the ends with an elastic, leaving about one to two inches of unbraided hair at the ends. Gently tug at the strands of the braid making it appear fuller and set with hairspray if needed.

Multi-Dutch Braid

Dazzle everyone with this hairstyle that looks more complicated than geometry, but is actually pretty easy once you have the hang of dutch braids.

Another variation on a Dutch Braid is to braid four separate braids and gather them together at the base to form two pigtails. Separate your hair into four sections, then dutch braid each section, securing it when you get to the base of your neck. Then combine the two braids on one side to make one braid. Finish braiding and secure with an elastic band. Repeat on the other side. This look usually looks better when it’s tight, so spritz with a hairspray to set.

Pull Through Braid

This mermaid tail style braid is certainly a head turner.

Section the top portion of your hair and secure with an elastic band. Clip the hair away from your working space. Part the next section of hair, and secure with another hair band, clipping it away as well. Work your way down your head. Unclip all your mini ponies. Starting back at the top section, separate into two parts and let them fall on either side of the pony below. Lift that pony up and clip so you can pull the two pieces together with an elastic band, adding it to the pony below. Pull the two separate parts loose so they bubble outward slightly. Unclip the second pony and then separate it into two parts letting them fall on either side of the pony below. Lift that pony up and clip so you can pull the two pieces together with an elastic band, adding it to the pony below. Pull the two separate parts loose so they bubble outward. Unclip and repeat, working your way to the bottom pony.
