Tears of joy, tears of pain – it’s all encompassing in Hulvey’s sophomore album Cry. There’s a lot of emotion, story and truth behind a tear. We can’t just pass tears by with assumptions that something’s wrong, nor can we overlook the possible depth to the pain one is experiencing. In his new album, Hulvey expresses “every drop means something” through the acronym Communion, Reflection, Yearning (CRY).
- Communion is about placing our burdens at the feet of God, because we know that only He can bring healing. Through that healing we can see the goodness He’s given.
- Reflection is about what we see, verses what God sees.
- Yearning is how everything leads to God and how much we need Him.
In it all, He hears our cry. “My hope is that listeners are comforted in these songs, recognizing that their tears are not in vain but are a powerful expression of their journey with God. He knows you, He loves you, and He desires to walk with you. Let every tear be a prayer,” says Hulvey about his new album release.

Hulvey on God’s Goodness and Vulnerability
The album carries themes of comfort and thanksgiving, as well as growing stronger in one’s faith. Hulvey’s music is an outlet to express what he’s learning and how God is maturing him in faith and stature. Hulvey decided to drop out of college to pursue a career in music. This is an important part of his story because it shows that God calls us for so many different reasons, and often when we’re least expecting. Hulvey’s incredible ability to connect with listeners as well as draw on cultural music trends gives him an awesome opportunity to reach out to people who aren’t looking for music about God. They’re just looking for a good beat. But Hulvey offers them worship and hip hop. His intentions are pure. Hulvey longs to bring listeners closer to God, revealing to them God’s ultimate goodness.
“Before writing this album, I found myself crying at the goodness of God in my life and wondering why I had these tears. I realized that those tears were a result of being overwhelmed by His love. This album is my invitation for us all to embrace vulnerability as a path to deeper connection with God,” says Hulvey.
Hulvey isn’t afraid of vulnerability because he knows that life and true healing exist when we’re willing to be raw. He encourages listeners to embrace vulnerability because that’s how we deepen our relationship with the Lord. Hulvey looks at the world with a young and vibrant perspective. He leans on God and relies on Him fervently. At the early age of 4, Hulvey knew that Jesus was his Savior. For Hulvey, that’s when his spiritual journey began. Church was essential in his life, which lead Hulvey to seek out God in everything so he could embrace a deeper understanding of his creator. Hulvey holds an immense reverence for God, which is his motivation to create music that reflects His beauty and majesty. Hulvey says, “my salvation comes from my personal relationship with God. I want to glorify God with my music, and to be honest and straightforward about how it is benefitting me personally.” The entire album is a testament to Hulvey’s commitment to staying true to himself and God.
