Loneliness is powerful. It can consume the soul and lead to darkness, but in those moments of loneliness, God’s light can pierce through with intensity. Jamie MacDonald has walked a life of loneliness and despair, but through it all, she remembered that God had not forgotten her.
Life was hard for Jamie. Growing up, she never really had a place to call home, nor a family to rely on. Her surroundings didn’t provide an opportunity to flourish. She moved around a lot, her mom divorced and remarried. What made sense to her became forbidden. Her life was filled with confusion, instability and uncertainty. Yet, God had a plan.
God gave Jamie the gift of music, but it brought such pain that she didn’t know how to use it. At the age of 10, singing was banned from her house, so she would have to go out to the woods and sing in solitude. Filled with confusion, she wondered, “how could something that brought her such joy, be so bad?” As a result of this internal torment, Jamie became angry and started harming herself. She felt like no one cared for her, so why should she care for herself? Yet, God met her in her time of desperation.
Jamie attended a church camp when she was 12 years old. The camp was filled with worship music and the counselors lovingly expressed how God had a beautiful plan for her life. She understood this truth deeply, but didn’t know what to do about it. This church camp experience became one of her warmest memories that she turned to over and over.
But, upon returning home, she became lost in the pain. By the age of 16, she was forced out of her home, started using drugs, heavily consumed alcohol and found herself surrounded by gang violence. Jamie dropped out of high school, buried in the party scene, she began seeping deeper and deeper into darkness. There were so many times that she never thought she’d go anywhere, she felt forgotten by God. Jamie couldn’t imagine succeeding because she felt like her life was defined by failure.
Jamie MacDonald finds healing
One night, Jamie looked at her surroundings and remembered that church camp. In the midst of friends going to jail or overdosing, she asked God to reveal His plan for her. Over time, God made a way for her to abandon the life she had been living, but it became a season of hiding. She was hiding her relationship with God from everyone she knew. Jamie had Jesus in her life, but she had to walk away from everyone else. She was developing her relationship with the Lord in secret, yet she felt a lot of loss, but she knew it was time to start over.
Jamie MacDonald jumped at an opportunity to go to Africa on a mission trip. During this trip, a strong yearning to sing was ignited and God began to heal the hurt and mend the brokenness. Jamie recognizes that she’s been trying to do what God has called her to do, but in her own way, and now it’s time to switch gears and let Him lead the way.
Through a restored relationship with her father, her mother finding Christ in a new way and doors opening in prison ministry, Jamie’s journey toward becoming a solo artist began. Jamie’s independent crowd funded albums were discovered and played on TV and she began working as a backup vocalist for Anne Wilson, Brandon Heath, Danny Gokey, Zach Williams, Megan Woods as well as other pivotal Christian artists. Content with being in the background, Jamie realized that God’s plan for her life is bigger. It’s now time to step into a music career that she thought was impossible. The power of music guides her to her identity. It took a long time for Jamie to embrace and understand her voice, but God’s kindness and patience became a prominent beacon in her life.
Strength in Singing
Since her journey as a solo artist is just beginning, Jamie MacDonald feels far from adequate. Tempted to hide behind people who are trained in music, or have been a Christian longer, God reminds her that He uses our weakness for His glory. The deepest part of our story that people often overlook is the part that God uses to impact the lives of so many other people. Now, Jamie is on the other side of the darkness, walking in God’s light. She isn’t hiding and living in loneliness, instead she’s living in a community of believers drawn to her songs and willing to share their own story of grief, heartache, hardship and desperation because Jamie was willing to be vulnerable. Jamie desires for God to use her. She wants to reach as many people with the truth, which really takes off the pressure. Rather than feeling inadequate, or like she needs to fit a mold, she now just focuses on God and where He’s leading her. This journey doesn’t have to be complicated when rest is found in God’s truth.
After spending years asking God why music matters, Jamie’s experiencing the answer. The hearts and souls of the people who listen to her music is why it matters. When we’re going through something hard, we need a map that points us to Christ. Jesus is near to the brokenhearted. He doesn’t shy away from people who are going through hard times or that are rejected by others.
Jamie prays that her story inspires others to go after what God has laid on their hearts. She wants others to know that they are not forgotten. Through this wild, and painful adventure God is still preparing Jamie for more, yet she doesn’t even know what’s before her, just like none of us do. But, He is with us every step of the journey. He has marked our path.
