Everyone reaches a point when they realize that life is hard. While reflecting on where you’ve come and where you’re going, you see that things have become more and more difficult over the years. It’s hard work to maintain a house, make money, build relationships, keep up with deadlines and expectations. And this doesn’t even factor bigger issues that seem beyond your control. It seems so easy to crumble under the pressure.

Staying within the protection and security of your parents isn’t the right solution to the problem. God has a big plan for you that’s beyond the scope of your family. At some point you need to branch out to discover your full identity, even thought life is hard.

Adulthood is hard. A lot of decisions need to be made. A lot of people are relying on you. But when you break down the things that make life complex, yet worth living, you see that at a basic level, it’s all about responsibility. You need to be able to carry your own load, especially when life is hard. You can’t rely on others to do it for you. Certainly, God will provide you with help, but you have to own what is yours to bear.

Yes, life is going to be hard at times. You can buckle under the pressure, or you can build a firm foundation and become the mature person God desires for you. He will guide you toward maturity, if you let Him. Here are four key steps to help you establish solid ground:

When Life is Hard, Rely on God

When you’re feeling unable to keep up with life’s demands, lean on God for strength and courage. He wants to bear your burden so you don’t have to. Matthew 11:28-30 says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Do It for Him

In his book, The Practice of the Presence of God, Brother Lawrence encourages readers to do things unto the Lord. Even the most minute, mundane tasks can be done for the Lord. Joy can be found in the hardest, most difficult responsibilities if God is praised and recognized. He is the provider of all things and He deserves honor. So take each responsibility as an opportunity to give God glory. Life is Hard, but God is greater than the hardship.

Invite God into the Process When Life is Hard

When you ask God to help you with each task, especially the things you don’t like, He will make them bearable. By bringing God into the process, you’re asking Him to guide you and provide clarity and ease. He will make life’s responsibilities more enjoyable, and you’ll see the purpose or meaning behind everything more clearly.

Take One Step at a Time

To reach your goal, meet expectations and accomplish what you’re responsible for, break it down into manageable tasks. If you can learn to focus on one responsibility at a time, you’ll more easily succeed. You don’t have to take care of every responsibility totally and completely when it comes your way. Just the same, you don’t need to tackle everything at once. Do what you can when you can. Little bits at a time move you forward. It’s about progress, perseverance and persistence. You summit a mountain by taking one step at a time.

Sometimes God will call you to huge challenges that seem unbearable and impossible. Sometimes He calls you to simply go through life managing the things He’s given. Wherever you are on the spectrum it’s important to let God guide youDon’t diminish your responsibility and don’t let your duty overwhelm and consume you. Know that there’s something greater than you in the midst of it all. You are a part of a larger picture and the role you play is significant.
