Makeup registers totally different in person than it does on screen. We asked some top photographers and videographers their tips for looking fresh and beautiful when interacting virtually – whether you’re posting social media images, on a video chat or cataloguing your life moment by moment.
Makeup for Video and Photography
Basic Face
Stick with a daily routine of washing your face, applying a foundation and then setting it with a powder. Anything more complicated isn’t worth the effort. A zit isn’t going to show up on screen, unless you’re picking at it (which you shouldn’t), so don’t be concerned about hiding it.
Easy Eyes
Any color reads dark on camera, so it’s best to avoid colorful eyeshadows, unless you’re going for drama with an up-close view. Gold offers a fantastic, soft glow. Swipe on a little mascara after applying eyeshadow along your lids. If you like darker eyes or want more definition, then add eyeliner, but it’s not necessary.
Neutral Lips
Go neutral. A lip gloss can reflect light in a weird way, so select a more natural product. A neutral lipstick or basic Chapstick is perfect. However, if you want to add a little color opt for a light pink or peach.
Makeup for Video and Pictures Needs Natural Light
The most important element is lighting. Natural light is the most beautiful, but you want that light to hit your face, not your back. So, set your computer or phone up so you’re facing a window or toward the sun. Your screen will let off a little light, but not enough to give your face the light it deserves. Avoid lighting directly overhead, this can add unattractive shadows. The best lighting outside is early to mid morning or late afternoon into evening.
