Summer has arrived, and that means no school and loads of down-time with family and friends. Now that homework’s been safely tucked away and the bell is no longer regulating your routine, it’s time to take the next few months to create a summer you and your girls will never forget. So instead of lying around watching rerun after rerun of High Potential and Gilmore Girls, or spending seven hours a day at the mall, check out our ideas for the simple summer of a lifetime:

9 Things to Do During Summer

  • Get a job at the local ice cream parlor, pizza place or fashion boutique with your best friend to make some extra cash
  • Use some of the money to take a dancing, racquetball, CPR, scrap booking, pottery, art or karate class
  • Join the local rec center and work with your parents, coaches or a trainer to set up a weight lifting program for you and your buddies; go back to school with a routine and feeling fit
  • Get a library card and compete with friends to see who can read the most books all summer long; the winner receives dinner at a fancy restaurant, paid for by – that’s right – the other participants
  • Turn off the TV all week and have a movie night every Saturday with popcorn and pedicures (bust out every chick flick you can think of: Sleepless in Seattle, A Walk to Remember, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Devil Wears Prada, etc.)
  • Instead of lounging by the pool everyday, offer to take your neighbors’ rambunctious kids swimming or to the park
  • Ask a parent for advice on how to cook your favorite meal, then get all your friends together and make a feast; eat it at home before you go catch the summer’s big blockbuster hit
  • Be active! Go for a run with your buddies, organize a hike or bike ride making sure to ask parents for the best trails and never go alone; check weather forecast, bring a lot of water and always tell an adult where you’re going
  • Last but not least, grab your camera and catch great candid photos of you with your gals all summer long; at summer’s end, make a scrapbook highlighting all the greatest moments.
