The weather is changing and your body can’t seem to maintain a healthy balance. Not only are you cold in the morning and sweating in the afternoon, but your class load and after school commitments are piling up, making you feel a little miserable. Its cold season, and you’re doing whatever you can to avoid the sniffles. Instead of dragging yourself to the nearest Target to pick up some Airborne, check out some of these natural remedies that might already be in your home:
Tomatoes for Vitamin C
Everyone knows that Vitamin C is one of the best nutrients when fighting a cold, but you just happen to be fresh out of OJ! Try some tomatoes instead. Marinara sauce actually has a high quantity of Vitamin C, so load it on a heap of whole grain pasta for some major comfort food satisfaction.
Beans for Extra Antioxidants
Blueberries are one of the best sources of Antioxidants – a natural cold fighting remedy, but this is not the season for blueberries. Instead, scoop up some beans. Red, Kidney and Pinto beans are the best, but any type of bean has cold-fighting qualities.
Licorice for a Bad Cough
If you have a bad cough, pull out some black Twizzlers. Black licorice actually helps subside a cough, so chomp on a piece or two when that cough just won’t go away.
Black Pepper for a Stomach Ache
When your stomach aches or you have other digestive struggles, sprinkle some black pepper on your food. Black pepper increases the secretion of hydrochloric acid, which aids proper digestion.
Ginger for Nausea
You’re feeling a little nauseous, but not enough to find yourself hanging close to the bathroom. To relieve the feeling, suck on ginger drops. If you don’t have ginger drops available, then add some fresh ginger to some tea.
Honey for a Sore Throat
Having a sore throat zaps your energy – you can’t eat, drink, swallow. Take some honey to sooth the pain by adding a teaspoon or more to a warm cup of tea. You’re welcome to try it straight out of the bottle, but that’s a little intense for most people.
Staying Healthy
The best way to overcome an on coming cold is to drink lots of fluids – water being the healthiest. Obtaining plenty of sleep is also essential to maintaining your health during this season. It’s certainly difficult to get the allotted amount of sleep when you have a lot of high demands, so pour on the water and flush out those germs.
